METRO SYSTEMS
2019
Data Visualisation | Interaction Design | Illustration
I was tasked with designing a piece of data visualisation that showcased the data set of 6 different metro systems from across the globe to families with children in a museum setting. In response, I aimed to design a digital, interactive outcome that allowed the audience to compare and contrast the information, while being able to visually communicate them in a compelling and engaging way.
As the audience were families, I sought to achieve a visual voice that felt accessible to a child and maintained visual appeal to an adult, with an additional motivation to lessen the intimidation of viewing a set of numbers and words. My approach to the illustrative style was inspired by building blocks and toys, as I wanted the audience to feel invited to play around with the interactivity and engage with the data. A retro inspired colour scheme was tested to highlight the historical aspects of the data.
The initial layout and flat-lay presentation evolved into an isometric viewing to allow more visual intrigue and ease of data comparison. This new view experimented with handwritten type to simulate the idea of observing and casually noting down these information. Further ideation simplified the iconography, changing the colour scheme to something brighter and cheerful, as well as allow more discernibility between each element, making the overall concept seem less clunky.
